Pokémon GO April Fools Day: What are the Poké Balls on the map?

April Fools Day is here, and Pokémon GO is once again holding a one-day-only event to celebrate. This year, the map is littered with Poké Balls. This is a mechanic somewhat borrowed from mainline Pokémon games, where you can often find a Poké Ball around the map as you explore.

This is a mysterious and limited time event, so we've gathered everything you need to know about the April Fools Day event in Pokémon GO.

We've seen a lot of different versions of April Fools in the game, and this year is no exception. If you are playing Pokémon GO between midnight and 11:59pm on April 1 you will see lots of Poké Balls appearing on the map.

These are interactive, and clicking on them will do one of two things. You will either get a surprise encounter from a set pool of Pokémon. Or, you will be given an item. These are all over the place so make sure to get out and explore to see what you can find.

Then, the items are either Poké Balls, Great Balls and Ultra Balls. However, you could potentially find something else. You never know quite what is in store!

April 1 falls on a Tuesday, which would usually have a Spotlight Hour between 6 p.m and 7 p.m. local time. This will be a special April Fools Day Pokémon GO Spotlight Hour, with more Poké Balls appearing around the map.

There will still be a bonus, which is 2x Catch Candy. This is probably the only time we will get a Spotlight Hour like this, so get out and experience it!
