Is he still related to Kenshi?

Takeda's long-awaited Mortal Kombat 1 gameplay reveal has finally arrived ahead of his July 23 release date. The former Kombat Kid will join MK1 alongside fellow MKX alumni Ferra, but the mystery surrounding Takeda's backstory has remained at the forefront of most discussions. Is he still Kenshi's son? Does he have any relation to Kenshi whatsoever? Here is everything you need to know about Takeda in Mortal Kombat 1.

Takeda is Kenshi's cousin in Mortal Kombat 1

Rather than being Kenshi's son, as in the previous timeline, Takeda is his cousin. An article published by Eurogamer provided the complete picture of Takeda's backstory in the rebooted Mortal Kombat 1 timeline.

"Similar to his cousin Kenshi, Takeda Takahashi was raised a Yakuza. Unlike him, Takeda enjoyed this lifestyle. That's why he was chosen to end Kenshi’s crusade against his masters. The fight mortally wounded Takeda. Unwilling to let his cousin die, Kenshi rushed him to the nearest help: the Shirai Ryu."

Based on that description, Takeda's background is not entirely different from his last appearance. In the Mortal Kombat X comics and MKX proper, Kenshi left a young Takeda with Hanzo Hasashi and the Shirai Ryu to protect him from Kenshi's enemies. Additionally, this provided the opportunity to train Takeda into a skilled warrior.

The description continues, stating that Kenshi allowed Takeda to remain with the Shirai Ryu to protect him from Kenshi's enemies. In this scenario, Kenshi is at odds with the Yakuza. Takeda remained with the clan and proceeded to become a lethal force. What his ending will entail remains to be seen, but we will find out on July 23.

Takeda and Ferra will close out Mortal Kombat 1 Kombat Pack 1, and players are brimming with excitement. Most fans would agree that Takeda was the most well-received of the four Kombat Kids. His bladed whips, Kunai, and agility stood out in the trailer. However, nothing was crazier than his Fatality, which depicted him using his whips as a blender. A Kombat Kast for Takeda will occur on July 18, just before he arrives on July 23.

With Kombat Pack 1 coming to a close, NetherRealm Studios recently announced its intentions to reveal Year 2 of Mortal Kombat 1 at San Diego Comic-Con 2024. The developers plan to unveil new characters and the story expansion, but all eyes are on Takeda until further notice.
