Mortal Kombat 1 Season 2 begins in February!

Amid rumors that the future of Mortal Kombat 1 downloadable content (DLC) is in flux, NetherRealm Studios (NRS) has announced that MK1's esports league is safe for another year. The NRSEsports revealed MK1 Pro Kompetition Season 2, set to kick off in February 2025. Although explicit details are not available yet, this positive contrasts the overwhelmingly negative sentiment surrounding Mortal Kombat 1's future. Here's what we know about Pro Komp Season 2.

MK1 Pro Kompetition Season 2 begins in Mexico City

On the heels of Dominique "SonicFox" McLean winning Final Kombat 2024 in June, they will be back to defend their title for MK1 Pro Kompetition Season 2. A pair of social media posts from NRSEsports say the season kicks off in Mexico City, Mexico, from Feb. 22 to 23 at the Marriott Mexico City Reforma Hotel. It's unclear what the event will entail, but we expect more details soon.

The state of Mortal Kombat 1's competitive league was somewhat in question, given the radio silence of late. NetherRealm remained tight-lipped regarding the Pro Kompetition circuit following Final Kombat. With the Khaos Reigns DLC officially here and new characters available, MK1 is back for another round of competitive events in Season 2.

What lies beyond the Mexico City event?

Since MK1 Pro Kompetition Season 2 is official, players and fans can expect a full year of competitive events. Although the format is unclear, it will likely resemble what we saw last year. NRS will partner with various tournament organizers where players can compete for seeding points. These will run adjacent to online regional qualifiers, allowing those who don't travel to gain points from home.

Ultimately, it will conclude with Final Kombat 2025 at a location to be determined. Only 20 players qualified for Final Kombat 2024, so it's fair to expect something similar. However, NRS will reveal more details regarding Pro Kompetition Season 2 in due time.
