Neither NetherRealm Studios nor Warner Bros. have commented on the report that Mortal Kombat 1 DLC has been cancelled.

A story stemming from a Reddit "insider" has made its rounds regarding the future of Mortal Kombat 1, and it doesn't sound promising. The leaker, known only by the alias FateUnknown, has revealed that a potential Kombat Pack 3 downloadable content (DLC) for Mortal Kombat 1 has been cancelled. This source's credibility is legit, predicting stages, character designs, and more over several years. Here's a complete breakdown of the situation.

For the record, it's important to state that nothing is official until NetherRealm Studios (NRS) or Warner Bros. Games officially confirms that Mortal Kombat 1 DLC will not continue past Kombat Pack 2. However, given FateUnknown's track record, there is merit to this leak. In the Mortal Kombat Leaks subreddit, the mysterious insider wrote that Kombat Pack 3 would no longer happen, partly due to the Khaos Reigns DLC's poor sales.

The story expansion and six-character Kombat Pack debuted on Sept. 4 to mixed reviews. Most players felt the story expansion added nothing of substance to the plot and was far too short. For $50, the consensus was that Khaos Reigns was not worth the price tag. The recent release of Ghostface as a guest character created a more positive sentiment, but Khaos Reigns has evidently not performed up to Warner Bros. expectations.

"Kombat pack 3 and a second story expansion were planned. All cancelled recently, no more characters after kombat pack 2. A kameo or two might make it since there has been work done on them but i dont know yet."

Although a pair of Kameos may emerge from the dust of this announcement, the insider believes Warner Bros. has cancelled all future DLC for Mortal Kombat 1. Fate followed that up, stating that Khaos Reigns' poor sales contributed to this decision.

What would Kombat Pack 3 have looked like if it happened?

In a follow-up post by FateUnknown, the first and only of their Reddit history, the leaker expanded upon the details and stated they would no longer provide additional MK leaks. They explained that Warner Bros. axed future Mortal Kombat 1 DLC for more than just poor performance, which was the primary reason. Although the details of the second story's expansion remain a mystery, Fate said Kombat Pack 3 would have shown appreciation to the fans for sticking around.

The lineup would have included the following characters:

  • Jade
  • Cassie Cage
  • Kung Jin
  • Sonya Blade
  • Kano
  • An unknown "highly-requested" guest character

Unfortunately, this may end any relevant details regarding MK1's future. It's unlikely that NetherRealm nor Warner Bros. would publicly state which characters were in the works. If anything, NetherRealm could proceed down the Mortal Kombat 11 route, where they effectively ended support for the game to work on other projects.

Given previous statements that the studio would support Mortal Kombat 1 DLC for multiple years, many have questioned these leaks. Furthermore, Warner Bros. recently highlighted Mortal Kombat as one of its marquee franchises that would remain a focal point in the studio's future gaming ventures.

As for FateUnknown, not much is known about this individual. However, they have leaked information such as General Shao's weapons, the fact that MK1 would not feature any new characters, specific stages, Peacemaker's delayed launch, and more. If you look through this user's comment history, it's safe to say this is a verifiable source.

Ultimately, we must wait to see if NetherRealm or Warner Bros. reacts to this information with how viral the story has become.
