Match recap: 100 vs R7

The whole series was super close and somewhat chaotic. Both teams had great moments, and it always was just a little bit of an advantage to get kills, secure objectives, and destroy Nexus.

Historically, North American teams perform better on the international scene than Latin America. But this LoL Worlds 2024 match finished differently. Out of all the chaos, Rainbow7 made clever picks in Game 3, and they managed to win many team fights. Their advantage grew substantially at the end, and they defeated 100 Thieves with a blast.

One more win is needed for Rainbow7 to qualify for the Swiss Stage at LoL Worlds 2024. Their opponent is the first Vietnamese team, GAM Esports. 100 Thieves fell to the lower bracket.

Game 1

This game had some chaotic back-and-forth action. At some moments, it felt like 100 Thieves were absolutely unstoppable. They tracked their opponents and eliminated Rainbow7 champions with ease. Then, there were periods when R7 suddenly recovered from the shock and almost erased the gold difference — a lot thanks to clever team calls.

The game’s end was cinematically wonderful! R7 had a great positioning for securing Baron, but 100T noted that and killed every single opponent. Baron went for Rainbow7, but at the cost of Nexus. 100 Thieves got one point in the match score.

Game 2

Rainbow7 made some great picks this time. Renekton in the hands of Summit was an excellent decision. Throughout the game, the crocodile rushed towards the opponents and eliminated his victims. In combination with the great play by Lyonz with Nautilus, the team fights were steadily in favor of R7.

The game was still very close. 100 Thieves had their moments to shine, like taking Baron. But they couldn’t bring it to a logical conclusion. Quite often, the reason for this was overstepping mistakes. After winning another one team fight, R7 secured Baron for themselves, eliminating four opponents and destroying their Nexus. Rainbow7 brought the match to the final game.

Game 3

R7 played on the blue side, and they copied some of the opponents’ picks from the previous game: Wukong for Oddie, Lucian for Ceo, and Nami for Lyonz. This strategy worked out well for them! Starting earlier, Rainbow7 looked strong. The might of LeBlanc and Keine were just a topping for this success, as the Latin American team confidently destroyed 100 Thieves in team fights.

Around the mid-game, it was clear that only a miracle can save 100T. Maybe they couldn’t handle the strength of their own picks? 100 Thieves were still great with resets, and even though R7 won fights, it cost them a lot.

Rainbow7 did not let this opportunity slip away from them, though. Even when 100T secured Baron, this objective turned out to be very negative for them. At some point, R7 pushed, and they never looked back.

The next opponent for Rainbow7 is GAM Esports in the qualification match.

100 Thieves and Rainbow7: An international boost

These LoL esports teams achieved great results in their regional championship.

100 Thieves recovered after finishing the North American League Championship Series (LCS) 2023 splits in the top 8. They reached place 4th in LCS Spring 2024 and 3rd in LCS Summer 2024. They couldn’t defeat Team Liquid and FlyQuest, who are traditionally the top 2 teams in North America. But it’s still a result to be proud of.

As for the international results, 100 Thieves were 11th-14th in the League of Legends World Championship 2022. Can they “steal” a higher placement this time?

Rainbow7 is a Mexican LoL team. The players are among the best in Liga Latinoamérica (LLA). They won both regional splits in 2023 and one in 2024 — with being 2nd at the other one.

That 2nd placement did not let Rainbow7 play at the Mid-Season Invitational 2024 (MSI 2024). Previously, R7 finished 10th-11th at the MSI 2023 and 21st-22nd at the LoL Worlds 2023. That’s a lot of space for improvement.
