Players are loving the game despite the recent PSN controversy.

Helldivers 2 is PlayStation's fastest-selling game of all time, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced on May 14. The popular live-service shooter developed by Arrowhead Game Studios sold over 12 million copies in the first 12 weeks on PlayStation.

Sony revealed Helldivers 2 had set this milestone on May 5 in a call with investors today and said the game "far exceeded" its expectations, according to IGN. Before Helldivers 2, PlayStation's fastest-selling game was God of War Ragnarok, which sold 11 million copies in 75 days in November 2022 following the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 release.

This is positive news for both Sony and Arrowhead Game Studios as they recently got out of a major PR crisis. Sony had decided to force PC players to create a PlayStation Network (PSN) account to keep playing Helldivers 2 on May 2, but quickly took a U-turn on May 5 after all the community backlash, which included review bombing the game on Steam.

What makes Helldivers 2 successful?

On top of delivering a great multiplayer experience, Helldivers 2 stood out for costing $39.99 at launch. Other popular shooters like Call of Duty games usually cost $59.99 at launch.

Since the game's release for both PC and PlayStation 5 on February 8, Arrowhead Game Studios also swiftly fixed bugs and added new content. There's little to complain about if you disregard the occasional server outages at the beginning of Helldivers 2's cycle and, of course, the now-defunct PSN requirement for PC players.

Helldivers 2's success could stimulate Sony to release more games for PC and PlayStation simultaneously instead of waiting years to release them for PC, like Sony did with The Last of Us, Ghost of Tsushima, and God of War. But, this is just us assuming for now.

That's all for now. Stay tuned to esports.gg for more gaming news.
