A huge milestone has been reached this week for Activision and Raven Software as Call of Duty: Warzone reaches 100 million players. The free-to-play shooter has been out for just over a year and has hit this historic landmark in rapid time.

Call of Duty: Warzone was released on March 10, 2020, captivating the hearts of millions with the franchises first ever free-to-play shooter. Last night Call of Duty broke the news on Twitter that Warzone had eclipsed 100 million players. The game has been out just over a year and quickly became a sensation with the fans.

This is not the first time Activision has Warzone hit an historic landmark. It was reported that Call of Duty: Warzone had reached over 15 million players within the first week. This achievement followed on from six million players playing the game within the first 24 hours.

Call of Duty brought the players together during lockdown

Call of Duty: Warzone released at the start of the Covid-19 global pandemic. A pandemic that would shock the world, and force people to remain in their homes for a long period of time. With Warzone being free to play, the newest battle royale gave every gamer the opportunity to separate themselves from what was happening around them and enjoy playing video games.

On top of that, the game even brought together groups of people who had never played video games before as a source of entertainment while they are stuck inside during government lockdowns across the globe.

The game became very popular quickly, with some of gaming's biggest content creators such as Ninja, TimTheTatman and Courage all streaming hundreds of hours of Warzone content for their fans.

Warzone has helped to bind the franchise together

Activision went in an entirely new direction with Warzone being the connection between Black Ops Cold War and Modern Warfare. Through in-game events and downloadable content, Call of Duty is starting to become one giant franchise, all connected through Warzone. For years, developers have opted into their franchises being separate from one another.

Warzone played a huge role in the announcement of Cold War. Multiple in-game events saw players come together to witness the announcement trailer for its latest game.

Marn's quick thoughts on Warzone during lockdown

Warzone was a great escape from reality during the initial lockdown here in the UK. The free to play aspect was a bonus but the gameplay to me was enjoyable and the games never felt repetitive.
