Mio and Zoe are both great, but sometimes you need a change

Split Fiction is unique in that it only allows you to play through the game in co-op with a single partner. With your partner, you both control one of Mio or Zoe, two struggling authors who get thrown into a virtual reality nightmare when they are lured to a tech company with the promise of a publishing deal. Throughout the different levels in Split Fiction, you play as either Mio or Zoe, but is there a way to freely switch between the characters with your partner?

How to switch between Mio and Zoe in Split Fiction

Whenever you start a playthrough of Split Fiction, you and your partner are given the chance to pick which character you want to play as. You can see a bio of each character as well as what genre of books they're into, which can help make your decision easier.

After that, you're thrust into the game and control the character you chose after a lengthy cutscene that explains the backstory of Split Fiction. While this is great for a while, every level gives each character a unique weapon, ability, or role, meaning the other player misses out on whatever the character has access to. For example, in one of the opening levels, Zoe has a gravity whip while Mio has a sword and gravity pull device.

Let's say that you're playing as Zoe but can't quite figure out the gravity whip or whatever ability you currently have. However, maybe your partner is better adept at your ability, so you might want to switch characters. You could just want to change things up as the game goes along.

All steps to switch between Mio and Zoe in Split Fiction

Fortunately, there's an easy way to switch between both characters in Split Fiction. The only problem is you have to restart from your last checkpoint to do so. Follow the steps below to freely switch between characters:

  • When you're in the middle of a level, press "Esc" or "Options" to bring up the menu
  • Choose the option to return to the main menu, which will restart you from your last saved checkpoint when you re-enter your current level. It's best to do this right after you hit a checkpoint
  • At the main menu, click the option to continue your playthrough (choose either Play Local or Play Online depending on your situation)
  • After doing this, you and your partner get the option to pick which character you want to play as
  • Pick either Mio or Zoe, depending on what character you want, and then enter the game again
  • You also get to pick your chosen character every time you restart Split Fiction, so you can leave the game and come back a few hours later and pick a new character

And there you have it, it's really that easy to switch between Mio and Zoe in Split Fiction. You can switch between them at any time as long as you're okay with losing a little bit of save progress (unless you switch after hitting a checkpoint).
