How to respec Passive Abilities in Path of Exile 2

Your Passive Ability points aren’t allocated permanently in Path of Exile 2.

The leveling system in Path of Exile 2 rewards you with one point to spend on a Passive Ability every time you level up your character. The Passive Abilities are different for every character at the start, sprawling several individual skill trees. While the early Passive Abilities will work for any build, some players might want to respec their points as they progress in Path of Exile 2.

While the game doesn't do a great job of explaining the respec process, it is possible to completely refund the Passive Ability points you've already spent. Let us show you how to do that in Path of Exile 2 in the guide below.

You won't be able to respec your passives straight away. In fact, it will take a few main story missions and several levels before you're able to change up how your passives are allocated.

To respec Passive Abilities, you have to unlock The Hidden One, who is an NPC that you bring back to life in the Clearfell Encampment. Una helps with this process during the quest "The Mysterious Shade." In this quest, you have to destroy runes on a tree to rescue a hanging person, who's clinging on to life. As you might assume, the hanging person is The Hooded One.

Once you complete The Mysterious Shade quest and speak to The Hooded One, you'll be able to converse with them at Finn's tent in the Clearfell Encampment. If you initiate dialogue with the NPC, you'll see an option to "Refund Passives" on the left side of the dialogue box.

When you go to respec your passives in Path of Exile 2, you have to pay a certain amount of gold depending on how many abilities you are refunding. However, this is never usually an issue for players who save their gold and don't purchase too many gear pieces or items from vendors. You can refund your passives as many times as you would like in Path of Exile 2, so don't be afraid to try out different builds with new abilities.

Of course, you can't try out new builds if Path of Exile 2's servers are down. If you find the servers aren't working, make sure to check out our previous on how to see if they're malfunctioning.
