The release date for the anticipated extraction shooter is here.
Bungie's new extraction-shooter Marathon has finally been showcased to the world, and along with some fresh gameplay, we also have a release date. The release date for Marathon is set for later this year, but before that arrives, players can partake in an alpha test later this month in April.
The launch of Marathon will surely be exciting for Bungie disciples and extraction-shooter fans, but its arrival date coincides with another major launch in 2025. Below, you can see the current release date for Marathon, what game it clashes with, and more details about the alpha in April.
Marathon release date set for September 2025
As announced by Bungie at the worldwide Marathon showcase, the current release date for the game is set for Sept. 23, 2025.

If you're a keen observer of major game releases, then you might recognize that date. It's the same release date as Borderlands 4, the next installment of the famed franchise from Gearbox Software. Borderlands 4 has been highly anticipated by fans for several years, with Borderlands 3 launching way back on Sept. 13, 2019.
It's unclear if Bungie would change the release date to not coincide with Borderlands 4's launch window, but as of right now, that's the date when Marathon will become fully available for players. Another factor that could play into both Marathon and Borderlands 4's release dates is the arrival of Grand Theft Auto 6, which is currently rumored to launch sometime around fall 2025.
Naturally, if GTA 6 is announced for anywhere close to a September release date, both Bungie and Gearbox Software would likely "delay" its upcoming titles. No developer wants to be near the launch of GTA 6, given how much weight it carries in the gaming community and its expected sales numbers.

The alpha won't be a reflection of the full build of Marathon, but it will give players a taste of what they can expect when the game launches in September (or later in 2025).
