Can you play Marathon solo?

Maybe not venture out alone.

Marathon is a stylish and fast-paced extraction shooter in which you play as cybernetic mercenaries known as Runners. Like Destiny, team synergy is vital for your survival in Tau Ceti, especially since you face off against the most unpredictable group of enemies — other players.

However, unlike Destiny, you can’t join a fireteam of two. Instead, you would have to team up with two other players, making it far trickier to find teammates for proper coordination.

On the other hand, if you’re a solo player, you have something else to worry about altogether. Things like — will I be able to play Marathon solo? Thankfully, we have the answer to that question.

Will you be able to play Marathon solo?

Yes, you can play Marathon solo, though not in a traditional sense. While the game has been designed as a three-player co-op experience, you can opt out of your crew and work independently. It’s like going Rogue in the Division’s Dark Zone.

In other words, you can keep all the Tau Ceti’s tantalizing loot for yourself, granted you survive long enough. Bungie mentioned this vital piece of info during its Marathon gameplay livestream and on the Marathon FAQ page on Bungie Help.

Every Marathon match consists of 18 players. In co-op, it means you would face off against five other teams. If you decide to go solo, you might have to finish off your teammates as well. Anything for loot, right?

Naturally, playing Marathon solo would be a bit harder than playing it in co-op. Bungie recommends playing solo “if you’re looking for an extra challenge.”

We don’t know how the PvE difficulty will scale up, especially since Bungie hasn’t confirmed any PvE bosses in Marathon yet. You may come across UESC security units, small bots that prevent you from stealing Tau Ceti’s lost riches. One of them’s called a Ghost Commander, who we are equally excited and terrified to meet. There are also explosive ticks whose nests you must destroy before these tiny creatures explode in your face.

In addition, there will be environmental hazards and traps that may inflict various status effects on your Runner. Surviving these could be easier if you have a teammate with an extra medkit or other items to heal or remove debuffs.

Extra challenges should come with extra rewards, though. You might gain a title for flawless solo runs as you do in Destiny 2, but this is just speculation on our side. Either way, Marathon will be playable solo, and we are very excited to get our hands on it.
